Database Project

This week I had to do a Database Project using Microsoft Access. In the project we are told to download a file from the course web page and save it in a certain format; then make a table, query, form, and a report in Access.

When making the table, query, form, or report it was not very difficult but modifying it to how the "boss" wanted it was very challenging. I used Access in a previous computer class but we just went about on how to make these records, not to modify them to any extent. With the table activity, importing the data took a little bit of time and I actually had to look though many of the comments on the discussion board to help find an answer but was able to import the data and the rest was a piece of cake. With the query activity, hiding the type of membership and putting certain fields in descending and ascending order were all simple but just like in Excel I had a tough time with the formula making process and that tiny portion took up most of my time when making the query. With the form activity, it was very simple and straightforward, I did have to go back and watch the lecture to find where it was to have read only material. And finally with the report activity, for me it was a lot like the form and I breezed right through it.

Unlike Excel, I don't have much personal use for Access right now. Maybe in a future class here at UF will have me using Access and I will be able to use it without much of a problem since I know the basics, have my notes, and will be able to use the tools that the lectures have shown me (i.e the formula builder and Access Help). Or maybe in a future career since I want to be either in management or marketing I could use Access to build queries, forms, and reports about our customers or products and group them to specific regions or products or any other field that may be needed.
